Did Regis Korchinski-Paquet fall to her death from her 24th floor apartment ?

Or was the 29-year old Black woman pushed?

Or is there some other explaination as to how her lifeless body ended up on Wednesday last week in front of the High Park Avenue  high-rise building in Toronto where she lived, after police was called to her apartment?

The incident has sparked angry response from many in Toronto’s Caribbean community who joned a large demonnstration in  the city on Saturday calling for ” Justice for Regis.”

And relatives of the dead womam are now looking for answers to questions about the death.

But they will have to wait until the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ontario’s civilian police watchdog,  completes its inquiries.

The SIU, in a brief statement, said that police had been called to the apartment around 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday last week in response to a domestic incident and that  while officers were inside an apartment unit on the 24th floor, “they observed a woman on the balcony” and “a short time later, the woman fell from the balcony to the ground below.”

But lawyer Knia Singh, a Toronto human rights lawyer who is spokesperson for the family  of the dead woman, wants to know how a call for assistance turned into a loss of life.

According to Singh. the dead woman’s mother had called police because her daughter was in distress over a family problem.

Singh said when police arrived, they met Regis Korchinski-Paquet, as well as her mother and brother in the hallway outside the apartment unit and the mother asked the police to  take her daughter to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

Singh then said “words were exchanged” between Korchinski-Paquet and police officers, and  Korchinski-Paquet said she needed to use the bathroom and went into the family’s apartment.

And. according to Korchinski-Paquet’s brother, approximately five to eight police officers then followed her into the apartment  but they stopped him from following his sister into the unit, said Singh.

” If so many officers officers went into your building, somebody has to have seen what happened, if she was trying to do something unusual,” he added.

“With that many officers, I can’t see how she would be able to get to the balcony and try to jump off ,” he said

Singh  also said he wants security camera footage to be secured by the SIU and ” the police officers involved” to be named.

He said he does not know if any of the police officers who were present were equipped with body cameras.

” That has not been established as yet. But it is a question everyone is asking.”

Toronto police has since confirmed that none of the officers involved were wearing cameras.

Toronto Mayor John Tory. in extending  condolences to the family and friends of the dead woman , said “we all want and need answers when a tragic death happens in our community,.

He said he hoped that the investigation into the death  of  Regis Korchinski-Paquet  ” will provide answers to the public as soon as possible.”
