Super Blue to headline Mother’s  Day fete in Toronto

Last month, the Toronto mas’ camps with their  colourful costume launches, kicked off the 2018 Carnival season in Canada.  Next month, calypso singers are making sure their part in the annual festival starts on a high note.

On Saturday May 12, a concert and dance will be held to help raise funds  for the Organization of  Calypso Performing Artistes (OCPA) and the Kaiso Forum Calypso Tent.  The organizers  of the event are getting Trinidad’s Super Blue to headline the Super Blue Pre Mother’s Day Fete.  It is being held at the Tam Heather Curling Club in Scarborough.

“ We talked to Super Blue a few months ago and told him about what we wanted to do,” said organizer and singer King Cosmos (Henry Gomez).

“When he heard we are doing something big to support calypso, he immediately signed on.

“Best way to see this superstar  is to attend the show. He won’t be back in Toronto in the foreseeable future.”

“ Structure  (four time winner of Canada’s Calypso Monarch competition) and myself are putting this together and we will be the emcees for the evening,”  Gomez added.

“Let others do the singing that night. Besides, we sing calypso, and the fete is all about Soca this time.”

Super Blue ( Austin Lyons), is credited with the ” Jump and Wave “style of singing. He is the father of singer Fay-Ann Lyons and has often performed and recorded with her and as well as Machel Montana.

Well  known throughout the Caribbean for wearing blue costumes and dancing atop speakers, Super Blue  developed a reputation for performing daring antics while on stage for the Soca Monarch competitions. Now in his early 60s, he is still an athletic performer.

Also performing at the Carib beer-sponsored fete are four well-known singers – Calypso Monarch winner Connector, Yellows, Palo and Grenadian Canadian Palo.

The Band Noww, Toronto’s Newest Soca Band  (this will be their second gig) will back up the singers.
