New board new vision for Caribana

Davina Reid

The results of the executive board positions elected by the Caribana Arts Group (CAG) membership are as follows;

Chair, Davina Reid, Vice-Chair, Tashia Antoine, Secretary, Stacy Hughes, Treasurer, Sean Defreitas, Assistant Secretary, Angela Gill and Director At Large, Paul Green

Reid, who has been with CAG since 2018 told the Caribbean Camera, that she and the new board are enthusiastic to get to work in restructuring and building a unified and forward-thinking organization. “CAG has an important role to play in preserving the culture, continuing this great legacy and serving the interests of our Caribbean community.”

Newly elected Vice-Chair Tashia Antoine, who joined earlier this year is passionate about developing more programs that teach our youth about the Carnival Arts, and its importance and connection to our history and Caribbean identity. Antoine stated that CAG is working to further build upon The Caribana Kids Club & Mini Carnival, a two-week mini camp in partnership with Tropicana Community Services that taught forty (40) youth ages 6 to 14, under the direction of mas designer Martin Scott-Pascall the art of mas-making. Other components of the program included music, steelpan, and the history of Carnival, all culminating with a “Mini Kiddies Caribana”.

“The program was a success, thanks to Tropicana and numerous board and community members that donated their time, materials and funds to make it happen.  We can’t wait to build on this program and develop other cultural programs to pass on the culture”.

As the new leadership tackles the mandates and vision for the organization, Reid acknowledged the hard work and efforts of the outgoing board and its dedicated members, and believes that CAG is on the right track to continue building, re-establishing its credibility and making a positive difference in the community.
