On May 3^rd was the United Nations Day for Freedom of the Press. At an event held last Friday under the auspices of The National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC), president Thomas Saras reminded the gathering that “Freedom of the Press is not recognized in many countries, including the United States.”

Each year, approximately 15 publications share their stories of facing imprisonment or exile due to their critical writings against governments. These publications were honored with special awards at the event, which was attended by 350 patrons.

The leader of Province of Ontario’s official opposition Marit Stiles served as the presenter and speaker. Additionally, two federal government cabinet ministers, several MPPs, city councillors and five Toronto mayoral candidates were present. The event featured music, food, and refreshments compliments of NEPMCC.

Chris Campbell, Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at Carpenters’ Union Local 27, received a special award for his work in promoting multiculturalism and supporting Freedom of the Press.

The gathering recognized the courageous NEPMCC journalists, as well as two young female journalists who are currently imprisoned in Iran.
