Canadians across the country celebrate Black History Month in February. This is a time when we honour the legacy of Black Canadians, both past and present, and reflect on their many contributions to our country.

The constituency office of MP Salma Zahid has traditionally celebrated Black History Month by holding in-person events in Scarborough Centre, featuring cultural performances and discussions in a relaxed way with members of various cultural backgrounds.

Since the pandemic still very much a part of life, the celebration has moved to an online Zoom platform. However, the fundamental concept of celebrating Black history and culture and the spirit of camaraderie and multi-culturalism has remained the same.

This year’s event will be held via Zoom on February 19, Saturday from 12 noon to 1:30 pm.

Among the people for this year’s celebration are Canon Donald Butler of The Church of St. Andrew Anglican; Pastor Melvin McGann and youth members Jonathan, Scott and Olivia Mulings of the Meadowvale East Apostolic Church; Laura Hammond, director of the Birchmount Community Action Council; Soha Mohammed of the Victoria Park Hub; Phyllis Adarquah of the Enhance Preparatory Centre of Ontario; Omer Mumish of the Scarborough Centre Youth Council, Louis Saldenah, leader of Toronto’s largest Caribbean Carnival bandleader; and The Hon. Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion.
