
An organizer with the activist group, Justice for Migrant Workers, is calling for ” an independent investigation” into the death of Romario Morgan, 22,, while in quarantine at a Mississauga hotel.
Morgan who came to Canda from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, to work on a farm in Ontario, was found dead in a room in the hotel last Thursday.The cause of death is not yet known.
An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.
Morgan was reported to have been staying at the hotel as part of mandatory 14-day isolation after his arrival in Canada. ”
Activist Chris Ramsaroop who is demanding ” better protection for migrant farm workers.” told The Caribbean Camera that they should be an “independent investigation ” into Morgan’s death.
Ramsaroop said there is lack of access to health care and changes should be made to employment standards and occupational health and safety laws to protect migrant farm workers from dangerous conditions and infectious diseases.
He noted that there are reports of recent deaths of two other farm workers, one from Trinidad and Tobago and one from Mexico. He said the two were in their workplaces when they died
Olaf Fontenelle, head of the farm liaison unit of the Eastern Caribbean, told The Caribbean Camera that the Peel Regional Police is investigating the death of Morgan and while the investigation is underway he could not comment on the case.
