Former Trinidad and Tobago calypso monarch Denyse Plummer who declared in song that “Woman Is Boss,” died in Trinidad on Sunday. She was 69.

She had been diagnosed with cancer.

When Plummer made her calypso debut at Skinner Park in South Trinidad in 1986, the mixed-race artiste was pelted with toilet paper while onstage. But the former pop singer overcame the rough reception and steadily gained popularity in the calypso arena.

In 1988, she won her first calypso crown with the Len “Boogsie” Sharpe’s composition, “Woman Is Boss.”

Plummer then went on to win the calypso queen title six times and placed second in the competition three times.

She was awarded the Hummingbird Medal (Gold) in 2011 for her contribution to culture.

In 2015, Plummer became a born-again Christian and started singing gospel.

She had been active on the gospel circuit until ill health forced her to stop performing.

She leaves her husband, Patrick Boocock, and their two sons.
