
Joan Bernadette Walcott Alexander was born on December 19th 1938 in Trinidad. She grew up in San Juan Quaisay opposite the market, and migrated to Canada in 1968. She lived in Hamilton where she married Albert Alexander before moving to Toronto
Joan died on February 5th 2022 of Esophageal Cancer at home in Markham in presence of her family.
She was a nurse for many years at various hospitals and nursing homes before becoming a private nurse. She retired after 30 years in the business.
She enjoyed all things Carnival (making, playing, travelling, judging, historian), watching the Raptors and her favourite show Dancing with the Stars. She travelled to Cuba more than 25 times, loved dancing, singing, knowing her culture to the deepest root, and knowing her family. In short SHE WAS A CULTURAL ICON!
Joan worked in several Caribana bands including The Associates, led by Jose Machado, and, with her son Soca Vibes, led a section in Louis Saldenah’s mas band.
Christmas was her special time of year, staging her annual “Joan Alexander & Friends Soca Parang Lime.” She did this for nineteen years. She also worked with Hawks International Boat Ride, Ladies in Red Dance, Over 50 Club, and the Trinidad & Tobago Heritage Group (TTHG).
Joan was born of parents Olga and Conrad Walcott, one of seven children: Monica Walcott – Clarke (sister), Jeff Walcott, Gloria Walcott, Cassie Walcott, Rudy Walcott, Otto Walcott. She is

survived by three sons, Kolin, Albert and Nigel.
She requested there be no funeral or service but only a visitation that will be held at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home on Thursday, February 10th, 2022 5:00pm – 9:00pm located at 8911 Woodbine Avenue in Markham, ON
