Guyana Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance Gail Teixeira told an audience in Toronto last week that she is sanguine about Guyana’s prospects despite the recent challenges posed by flooding, COVID, etc.

Oil and gas offer real opportunities for Guyana to fulfil the promise of a better life for every citizen. But she cautioned that Guyana will not make the same mistakes that other countries made with the windfall profits that came with the discovery of oil.

Oil, Teixeira insisted, will not be exploited while ignoring other important sectors like agriculture and the development of human resources. In fact, oil will be used as a catalyst to develop a more balanced and sustainable economy, knowing that someday the wells will run dry.
