The 54th Republic Anniversary of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana was commemorated with great pride and jubilation, as the Guyana Ottawa Cultural Association Inc (GOCA) hosted a splendid dinner and dance in Ottawa on March 9. The event was not only a celebration of Guyana’s independence but also a testament to the enduring spirit and resilience of the Guyanese people.

The evening was graced by distinguished guests, including Mrs. Lucresha Bryan-Finch, Counsellor for the Guyana High Commission to Canada, who represented the High Commission. The atmosphere was charged with a sense of unity and pride, as attendees came together to honor their homeland’s journey since becoming a Republic in 1970.
The highlight of the night was the keynote speech by Mr. Kevin Williams, a lawyer with the Children’s Aid Society of Peel and a proud son of the Caribbean. Born to a Saint Lucian mother and a Guyanese father, Kevin embodies the rich cultural heritage of the Caribbean. His speech was a powerful homage to Guyana’s independence, as he shared personal anecdotes and reflections that resonated with the theme of the celebration.

Williams’s address was a vivid tapestry of memories and experiences, woven with the colourful threads of Guyanese culture. He recounted his early days in Georgetown, the capital city, where he was immersed in traditions like Mashramani and the joy of kite flying during Easter. These memories, he emphasized, are the building blocks of his identity and a constant reminder of Guyana’s rich cultural legacy.
Williams highlighted the values of resilience, determination, and unity that he inherited from his Guyanese heritage. He called upon the audience to channel these values into making a tangible difference in the lives of the most vulnerable, especially children in need of care and protection.
The event was a lively celebration of Guyana’s independence, with attendees reveling in the shared sense of belonging and pride in their nation’s achievements.
As the evening came to a close, the message was clear: the spirit of independence is not just about celebrating a historical milestone, but about embracing the values and traditions that define a nation.
