Kenrick Vincent Joseph Bruzual, a celebrated contributor to the Caribbean community in Canada, passed away on March 25th at the Scarborough Grace Hospital at the age of 82. He was recognized for his contributions to the Toronto Caribbean Carnival with the Pioneer Award and was a long-time occasional contributor to the Caribbean Camera newspaper.
Bruzual had a special interest in the Impact Awards and was particularly impressed by Colleen Russell-Rollins, Director of Education of the TDSB, for her commitment to ending all forms of discrimination in education policies, practices, and programs.
In a recent article dictated to the Camera by Bruzual, he spoke of the keynote speech by Dr. Mary Ann Chambers at the Impact Awards ceremony, who paid tribute to all the recipients of the evening. Bruzual’s passion for reporting was evident, even as he dictated the article from his phone at the age of 82 because he believed it was important for the community to know what the Camera was doing for them.
Bruzual’s contributions to the development and evolution of Caribbean Carnival Arts in Canada are immeasurable. He arrived in Canada in the 1960s and has been involved in all things Caribbean since then. His passing will be deeply felt by the Caribbean Camera and its readers.
Bruzual’s funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 15 at 10:30 a.m. at Precious Blood R.C. Church, located at 1737 Lawrence Ave E., just East of Victoria Park. The burial will be at Pine Hills Cemetery located in Scarborough at 625 Birchmount Road at St Clair. Bruzual’s repast will be held at Tropicana on Huntingwood Ave from 1:30 to 5:00 pm.
He is survived by Judith Niles, his partner of 45 years, as well as his daughters Jennifer, Jeanine, Khalilah, and son Kareem.
