Mr Samuel Hinds, who served both as President and Prime Minister of Guyana, has assumed duties at the Embassy of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana as Guyana’s ninth ambassador to the United States of America (USA) and also as the fifth Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS).

Ambassador Hinds has had a long career working in Guyana, beginning at the Demerara Bauxite Company in 1967 and staying on after its nationalisation in 1971 until 1992 when he was appointed Prime Minister. He served in that post until March 1997 when he became President following the passing of former President Dr. Cheddie B. Jagan.

When Jagan’s widow Janet won the December 1997 elections, she reappointed Hinds Prime Minister and he served in that position continuously until May 2015. He therefore served as Prime Minister under President Cheddie Jagan, President Janet Jagan, President Bharrat Jagdeo and President Donald Ramotar.

He attended the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada (1963- 1967) where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering, and is also the holder of an Honorary Doctorate of Science (1994) from that university.

Ambassador Hinds brings to his new post, a wealth of experience, having served in the highest offices of Government and will work to the further strengthening extant relations between Guyana and the United States, as well as the Organization of American States.

Guyana and the United States established formal diplomatic relations on May 26, 1966 and with the Organization of American States in 1991.
