Canada’s promising start in the inaugural Over-40s World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, where they won their opening games, has unfortunately not culminated in a qualification. Despite their initial success, Canada’s journey came to an end after suffering a defeat against England on Sunday.
Finishing at number 5 in the points standings by the completion of the preliminary stage, Canada fell short of advancing to the semis. In contrast, England secured their spot in the semis after winning all their games, while Canada managed only two victories.
The match at Green Point Cricket Club ground saw Canada batting first at England’s invitation. However, Canada could only muster an inadequate total of 128 all out in 28.2 overs. England, in response, comfortably chased down the target with 131-1, leaving 20 overs unused.

Former England international player Nick Compton played a pivotal role in England’s victory with an impressive, unbeaten 75. He received excellent support from opener Steven Naylor, who contributed 54 not out. The pair shared a 115-run, second-wicket stand after Canada made an early breakthrough.
In the batting department, Canada struggled to find momentum, with Kiran Bodhasrungi top-scoring with 30. Muhammad Yunus Anwar also chipped in with 30 towards the end. Canada was missing their captain and frontline batsman Vinay Devisetty due to a back injury. Devisetty had been in fine form, scoring a century (103*) in the first match against Namibia, where Canada won by 3 wickets. He also scored 66 against Zimbabwe and 54 versus the USA.
Despite their setback, Canada will now play Wales for the Bowl Cup. The final for the World Cup trophy is set to take place Friday at the Western Province ground in Cape Town, with England playing South Africa and Australia taking on New Zealand.
The Over-40s World Cup, which began with twelve countries participating two Mondays ago, includes Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Zimbabwe, South Africa, India, Sri Lanka, England, USA, Namibia, and the United Arab Emirates.
