Calypso has been out of the international spotlight for a very long time. Trinidad-born British calypsonian and music teacher Alex D Great (Sandy Loewenthal) recently brought down the house with his polished performance of a self-composed calypso tribute to Queen Elizabeth II for her 70th Jubilee.
With this smash performance on BGT 2022, Alex D Great has done more to boost calypso than any other contemporary artist, and that doesn’t even count his years of travel to schools and communities across England teaching, performing and promoting calypso, or his enormous contribution to the annual calypso tents in London for Notting Hill Carnival.
