Toronto Mayor John Tory has announced a plan to implement road tolls on two major highways in the city -the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway. Should the road tolls be implemented?

People have to understand that public policy is a balancing act. If you want development in your society, you’re going to have to pay taxes. That doesn’t mean though that the government should impose a harsh two dollar fee instead of starting it off with a light 25 cents fee. Yes I know billions of dollars are needed to rebuild Toronto but everything takes time. I think Mayor John Tory has been doing a great job so far addressing problems and finding solutions. But If you’re going to charge two dollars, we need to see results.

I think the tolls should be implemented. I believe this would be a great step towards rebuilding Toronto’s infrastructure. Many major cities leverage tolls to raise revenue to pay for the upkeep of their roads and it is about time we did the same. The only downside to this would be for the Toronto residents that use the DVP or Gardiner more than two times per day. However, I am sure they could create some kind of monthly pass to alleviate some of that financial strain.

Yes ,I think that people will not miss two dollars and this will go a long way in repairing the roads in Toronto. The roads are really bad and the city needs all the help it can get to repair them. The toll will also reduce the congestion on the two highways.

No tolls on the DVP and the Gardner! These roads are already paid for by the taxpayers through property tax and vehicular taxes. I hope the mayor remembers that a city without traffic is a dead city – one with lost revenues.

No! Tolls will affect too many people negatively. The mayor must come up with better options. The tolls will definitely hurt local city businesses with the resulting lack of traffic and moving all that traffic from the highways to the streets of the city will put our children at greater risk.
