In a move aimed at fortifying its commitment to diversity and inclusion, Canada has launched the Anti-Racism Strategy 2024–2028, titled “Changing Systems, Transforming Lives.” The strategy, spearheaded by the Honourable Kamal Khera, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities, is a comprehensive initiative designed to tackle systemic racism and discrimination across the nation.
Since 2015, Canada has prioritized advancing diversity and inclusion to enhance societal equity and ensure all individuals can achieve their full potential. Despite progress, racism persists as a significant barrier for many Indigenous peoples, Black, racialized, and religious minority communities in Canada, impeding their full participation in society and undermining shared values.
The new Anti-Racism Strategy represents a substantial $110.4 million investment, focusing on key areas such as employment, justice, law enforcement, housing, healthcare, and immigration. Over 70 federal initiatives are included, aimed at aligning federal policies, programs, and services with the diverse communities they serve. Additionally, over $70 million will be allocated to support local initiatives across the country in partnership with community organizations.
Minister Kamal Khera emphasized the strategy’s role in strengthening federal efforts to combat racism within institutions and support grassroots initiatives nationwide. Reflecting on global events that have underscored the urgency of addressing racism, Minister Khera highlighted Canada’s commitment to fostering inclusivity as a choice, not just a fact of diversity.
The Anti-Racism Strategy builds upon the groundwork laid by Canada’s previous efforts, notably the first Anti-Racism Strategy (2019–2022), which allocated nearly $100 million to combat racism and support multiculturalism through community-based projects. This continuity underscores Canada’s ongoing commitment to addressing systemic racism comprehensively.
In addition to its domestic efforts, Canada has endorsed the UN International Decade for People of African Descent, extending its commitment until 2028. This initiative aims to promote equality, empower Black Canadians, and enhance their leadership across sectors such as business, social justice, and community development.
Moving forward, Canada remains dedicated to advancing inclusivity and combating racism through collaborative efforts at the federal, provincial, and community levels. The Anti-Racism Strategy 2024–2028 marks a pivotal step in this ongoing journey toward a more equitable and inclusive society for all Canadians.
