Bring Back Our Girls

Trinidad and Tobago’s Rhoma Spencer joined a collective of cultural representatives at Toronto City Hall recently with one theme: Bring Back Our Girls.

Spencer, a producer and actress, told The Camera the Toronto Artists Concert was in solidarity with Nigeria, where 200 girls were captured by Boko Haram, a radical Islamic sect.

Expressing solidarity with the captured girls in Nigeria, Halima Hamy, a representative of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women, said: “Women are not victims. We are agents of change.”

Among the participants were John Tory and Olivia Chow, Toronto mayoral candidates, who expressed their concern and encouraged the girls to keep the faith.

Canadian singer Drake was quoted at the concert, saying “there is hope for me. Hope for you. Our voices will be heard. There is hope for the world.”

Also at the event was the calypso monarch Macomere Fifi, who paid tribute with her song Mother and Daughter. She told the gathering, “I pray for these girls to come home and sit at the bedside of their mothers.”
